BYU Football: Quarterback Koy Detmer Jr. Transferring
Walk-On QB reportedly transferring to Texas A&M Kingsville
Detmer Jr. appeared in two games in 2017 season.
According to BYU Insider Dick Harmon from the Deseret News, quarterback Koy Detmer Jr. is leaving the BYU football program.
Detmer had an opportunity to be a student assistant with the Cougars this coming season, but will likely extend his playing career with this move to Texas (the school is located 130 miles from his home). His uncle, Ty Detmer, confirmed the news on Thursday.
Detmer Jr. was a walk-on quarterback for the Cougars and after one appearance against Utah State, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake never gave Detmer Jr. an opportunity to play again until the last few snaps against Hawaii to close out the season.
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake was very candid about Detmer Jr. after the Utah State game that he was not going to factor into the quarterback conversation going forward.
With Detmer gone, the Cougars are expected to have the following eight quarterbacks during spring football.
- Tanner Mangum, Sr. (Injured)
- Beau Hoge, Jr. (Injured)
- Joe Critchlow, Soph. (Walk-On)
- Kody Wilstead, RS-Fr.
- Hayden Griffitts, RS-Fr. (Walk-On)
- Baylor Romney, Fr. (Walk-On)
- Stacy Conner, Fr.
- Zach Wilson, Fr.
BYU spring football is projected to start at the beginning of March.
