Saint Mary’s Randy Bennett Had Short Postgame Handshake With Dave Rose
Bennett has a history of quick postgame handshakes after defeats.
Gaels now wait to learn their postseason fate
BYU pulled off an upset in the West Coast Conference Tournament on Monday night by knocking off No. 22 Saint Mary’s who was the pre-season favorite to win the WCC entering the season.
When the clock struck zero and the Cougars officially pulled out the upset and knocked off the same Gaels team that crushed BYU by 31 points one year ago in this same tournament, St. Mary’s head coach Randy Bennett wanted no part of any pleasantries between him and BYU coach Dave Rose after the game.
When Rose went in for a postgame handshake, Bennett made zero eye contact and blew past Rose as fast as he could.
The strong relationship BYU has with Gonzaga away from the court and the mutual respect on it, can’t always be said with Saint Mary’s. Bennett rubs people the wrong way with some of his behaviors, and this postgame handshake…or lack thereof is nothing new with him.
Last season, after Gonzaga won the WCC Tournament title, Bennett blew past Gonzaga head coach Mark Few in the postgame handshake line.
Saint Mary’s will now sweat it out between now and Selection Sunday to find out if they will receive an NCAA Tournament bid or if they are headed towards a repeat of the 2016 season where despite an impressive record, they are snubbed from the field of 68.
Maybe the Selection Committee will opt to blow past the Gaels like Bennett does to fellow coaches in the WCC? Should be interesting to watch on Sunday.
