BYU Football Recruiting: Arizona State In The Lead To Land Four-Star QB Jacob Conover
Conover is nearing a decision for his choice of school.
Could BYU lose out on the top LDS QB for the second year in a row?
Jacob Conover is a four-star quarterback prospect from Chandler, Arizona. Conover is one of the highest-rated quarterbacks in the nation for the class of 2019.
Richard Obert of the Arizona Republic who has been covering recruiting in Arizona since the 1980’s did a feature on Conover for the Republic and he documented how Conover is nearing a decision possibly in May between the likes of Arizona State, BYU, Oregon State, and Stanford.
Obert joined me on Cougar Sports on ESPN 960 AM on Friday to discuss Conover’s recruitment. Obert said that Conover is going to be visiting Arizona State soon for an official visit and BYU after that. Stanford, who has been a thorn in BYU’s recruiting efforts for the past seven to ten years, has yet to offer Conover, but they still remain in the mix. Conover took an unofficial to Stanford in March.
But right now the biggest thorn for BYU in the recruitment for Conover might be the hometown Arizona State Sun Devils coached by newly hired Herm Edwards.
Obert joined me on Cougar Sports on ESPN 960 AM on Friday and said that Arizona State currently has the edge in landing the talented four-star quarterback.
Conover, who is LDS but doesn’t have plans to serve an LDS mission, wants to compete right away for a starting position at whichever school he chooses.
One positive for BYU is that Conover’s number one target last season at Chandler High, Gunner Romney is at BYU, and that could play a role in Conover’s recruitment if he wanted to pair up with his old high school teammate.
The full interview with Obert can be heard below.
Jacob Conover also joined us on ESPN 960 last month to share his thoughts more in-depth on BYU and his timetable to make a decision.
