BYU & Wyoming Discussing Home-And-Home Football Series
WyoSports.net is reporting that old WAC/MWC rivals are “in talks” for a two-game series.
This might be the one opponent BYU doesn’t want a November date with
Robert Gagilardi from the Laramie Boomerang reported on Monday night that old WAC & Mountain West Conference rivals BYU & Wyoming are in talks to schedule a home-and-home series in football series. The dates are not known at this time.
This makes a lot of sense for all parties involved. Especially if the games are played in November…well, November in the game at Provo. September or October in Laramie. But, if you want to stay true to the rivalry that was BYU & Wyoming back in the day, throwing BYU in Laramie in a November game would keep the spirit of the game authentic.
BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe expressed back in January that there are no hard feelings between BYU and the original members of the Mountain West Conference. Holmoe did note that there were some hard feelings from those original members back when BYU declared their independence in 2011, but since things have thawed according to Holmoe from his semi-annual media roundtable earlier this year.
BYU has a future series scheduled with San Diego State and there was nearly a series lined up with Air Force recently, but it just couldn’t work out.
BYU and Wyoming faced each other two years ago in the last-ever Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego in which BYU won, 24-21.
Wyoming Athletic Director Tom Burman said that he would “consider” renewing the BYU football rivalry again two years ago. Which was notable considering that Burman was very vocal when BYU announced they were going independent in 2010 that he wouldn’t schedule any more games with BYU in the future.
2022 & 2024 are the earliest schedules where Wyoming has openings in their non-conference schedule. In 2022, BYU already has eight games scheduled and in 2024 the Cougars have four games already on the slate.
Personally, I’d like to see an old WAC rival return on the schedule. Would be good for BYU to have more regional matchups against programs that BYU has a lot of history with.
