Former San Francisco Dons head basketball coach Rex Walters joined the Bill Riley Show on ESPN 700 in Salt Lake City on Friday.  The former NBA player and Kansas Jayhawk hopped on the show to surprise Riley, who’s a Kansas graduate.

As Walters hopped on the show, he said, “I was a little bit concerned to come on your program knowing it was in Utah. I wasn’t the most liked guy in Provo, Utah.”

In five of Walters eight seasons at San Francisco, BYU was a member of the West Coast Conference.  Walter’s was known for having a lot of emotion on the bench, thus not gaining much of a fan base with the Cougars.

Most recently, Walters was an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons until Stan Van Gundy was let go with the organization leaving Walters without a job as well.

Listen to the interview you can hear Walters references to BYU towards the beginning of the interview.  He even gives a “go Cougars” shout-out at the end.
