BYU continues to receive national recognition with the win over Wisconsin.
USA Today holds a nationwide vote for the Amway Coach’s Call of the Week. This is for coaches who quote “change a game or are just thrilling to watch.”
Guess who this week’s winner was? The one and only Kalani Sitake. He was honored for the two calls, or the two timeouts before Wisconsin kicked.
“Does calling a timeout to ice a kicker work? How about calling two timeouts? That’s what Sitake did with No. 6 Wisconsin set to line up for a potential game-tying field goal with 41 seconds remaining. The unorthodox method worked as Rafael Gaglianone pulled the kick wide left, giving the Cougars a rare road win against a top 10 opponent.”
BYU is getting heaps of recognition after beating Wisconsin, with good reason. But, Sitake said he did it for other reasons besides, icing the kicker.”
“More than anything, I wanted to get our defense rested,” Sitake said. “They were tired. It was a long drive. I took a timeout to get them rested and I saw (Corbin Kaufusi) still huffing and puffing, so I thought, ‘let’s take another one to get them fresh.’ That was the main reason. It wasn’t to freeze the kicker.”
