Scheduled for Saturday, March 28, the fixture at Anfield aims to raise crucial funds for the LFC Foundation—the club’s official charity branch that named Klopp an honorary ambassador following his emotional departure in 2024.
Sitting on the touchline alongside club royalty like Sir Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, and John Aldridge, Klopp’s presence brings an extra layer of nostalgia to a fixture already steeped in history. The timing couldn’t be more poetic, coming right ahead of the 10-year anniversary of that legendary April 2016 Europa League quarter-final. Back then, in his debut season, Klopp masterminded a breathtaking 5-4 aggregate comeback at home, clawing back from two goals down twice in the second leg. During his historic nine-year tenure, Klopp delivered eight trophies, broke a grueling 30-year top-flight title drought, and conquered Europe and the world.
Yet, as Klopp prepares for a nostalgic look back, Liverpool’s current squad is staring down a potentially massive shake-up, with AC Milan eyeing an audacious swoop for the club’s defensive anchor.
Over in Italy, the Rossoneri have already put the football world on notice by splashing roughly €70 million on Paris Saint-Germain’s 25-year-old forward Gonçalo Ramos. But Milan’s hierarchy isn’t done building. With the frontline locked down, attention has pivoted squarely to the backline, where Zlatan Ibrahimovic is pushing for a true blockbuster signing: Virgil van Dijk.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Ibrahimovic has been banging the drum internally for the 34-year-old Dutch captain since the spring. Milan’s ownership group, RedBird, is currently crunching the numbers to see if a transfer for the 96-cap international is actually viable from both a financial and sporting standpoint. For Milan’s manager, Ruben Amorim, Van Dijk represents the ultimate leadership solution at center-back—a proven winner who transformed Liverpool into a defensive juggernaut, picking up a Champions League title, two Premier League crowns, and an FA Cup along the way.
Pulling this off will be anything but straightforward. Van Dijk is heading into the final year of his contract at Anfield, and there’s no definitive word on whether he actually wants out of Merseyside. More importantly, Liverpool’s backline has already taken a massive hit with Ibrahima Konaté’s departure to Real Madrid. The Reds are highly unlikely to sanction the exit of their captain and defensive talisman under those circumstances.
Realistically, if the Van Dijk dream falls through, Milan has a backup plan ready to go. Italian outlets point to Sporting CP’s Gonçalo Inácio as a far more achievable target, likely commanding a fee in the €30-40 million range. Inácio has spent years playing under Amorim at Sporting, making him a seamless tactical fit for the new manager’s system.
