Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks Germany Curse with Decisive Goal in Nations League Semifinal

Cristiano Ronaldo added yet another milestone to his legendary career on Wednesday, as the 40-year-old scored the winning goal in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Germany in the UEFA Nations League semifinal — marking the first time he has ever defeated the German national team.

Before this match, Ronaldo had faced Germany five times and lost on each occasion. In fact, Portugal hadn’t beaten Germany in 25 years, with the last victory dating back to Euro 2000. That long-standing streak finally ended in dramatic fashion, with Ronaldo once again proving to be the difference-maker on the international stage.

The semifinal initially tilted in Germany’s favor after Florian Wirtz opened the scoring with a header in the 48th minute. However, Portugal responded with a moment of brilliance from Francisco Conceição, who fired home the equalizer just after the hour mark.

Then came the decisive moment. In the 70th minute, Nuno Mendes delivered a precise square pass into the box, which Ronaldo calmly tapped into an open net. It was his 137th goal for Portugal and the 937th of his professional career — both world records that he continues to extend.

The goal not only ended a personal and national drought against Germany, but it also secured Portugal’s place in the Nations League final, scheduled for June 8. There, they will face either defending champions Spain or World Cup runners-up France.

Adding to the symbolism of the night, Francisco Conceição — son of Sérgio Conceição, who scored a hat-trick in Portugal’s last win over Germany — played a pivotal role in breaking the curse.

“We have to enjoy this win. It’s been a long time since we beat Germany,” said Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez after the match. “Tactically, we were outstanding and the team showed incredible commitment. This was a collective achievement.”

He added: “Now we’ll recover and prepare for the final. We want another strong, character-driven performance in this jersey.”

Ronaldo’s Future Remains Unclear

While Ronaldo continues to defy expectations on the field, questions remain about his future at the club level. Now in his third season with Saudi side Al Nassr, the Portuguese icon sparked speculation last month with a cryptic message on social media.

“This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Thanks to all,” Ronaldo posted, alongside a photo of himself wearing his Al Nassr kit.

His contract with the Saudi club is set to expire at the end of the season, which would leave him free to sign with any team. Meanwhile, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has hinted that Ronaldo could be part of this year’s inaugural Club World Cup — a tournament Al Nassr did not qualify for — further fueling rumors of a potential move.
