Manchester United just pulled the plug on Tyrell Malacia’s move to Besiktas in dramatic fashion. The defender was literally moments away from boarding a flight to Turkey. Instead, United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, stepped in at the eleventh hour and told the left-back to turn around. It’s a tough break for Malacia, who was looking forward to consistent minutes with the fifth-place club in the Turkish Super Lig. For now, he’s stuck back in Manchester.
A Deepening Defensive Crisis
Wilcox’s sudden change of heart didn’t happen in a vacuum. The Red Devils are currently dealing with a severe shortage of healthy bodies on the left side of their defense. Patrick Dorgu recently went down with a hamstring injury during United’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Arsenal. Caretaker manager Michael Carrick confirmed the Danish defender is going to be sidelined for a while.
Things aren’t looking any better for the team’s prospects away from Old Trafford. Norwich manager Philippe Clement admitted the youngster is facing a lengthy recovery period. With all these setbacks, Luke Shaw is the only fit left-back remaining on the active roster. Blocking Malacia’s exit was simply a matter of making sure the team had enough players to field a defense.
Struggles on the Pitch
Malacia desperately needs playing time. He’s barely seen the field this season, logging exactly one appearance—a brief two-minute cameo off the bench against Newcastle on Boxing Day. Otherwise, he’s spent 13 league games sitting unused on the sidelines.
Ever since he transferred from Feyenoord in July 2022, his time at the English powerhouse has been pretty forgettable. He’s made 48 total appearances across all competitions, starting 34 of them, but his momentum has been completely derailed by injuries. He has missed a staggering 70 matches due to various health issues. The Dutchman finally managed to get some reps while on loan at PSV Eindhoven during the back half of the 2024/25 campaign, taking the field 12 times. Now, he’s back to waiting for an opportunity.
The Mass Exodus Continues
While Malacia was forced to unpack his bags, plenty of other big names have already left the club. United has been busy clearing house. Alejandro Garnacho and Antony secured permanent transfers to Chelsea and Real Betis, respectively. High-profile earners Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were also shipped out on season-long loans, landing at Aston Villa and Barcelona. Even Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana found themselves loaned out to Napoli and Trabzonspor as the front office continues to shake things up.
Juventus Circles for Ugarte
The roster overhaul might not be done yet. Manuel Ugarte could be the next high-profile player heading out the door, with a summer move to Serie A looking like a real possibility. According to reports from the Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus is showing serious interest in the 24-year-old defensive midfielder. The Italian club’s brass, including sporting director Marco Ottolini, are scouting him directly on Tuesday night. They’ll be evaluating him in Turin during a friendly match between the Uruguayan national team and Algeria.
Ugarte’s situation at United hasn’t exactly panned out. He arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in August 2024 with a hefty €50 million price tag. Despite the massive investment, the 34-cap international hasn’t carved out a meaningful role under the current coaching staff. He’s only started seven Premier League games so far this season. Juventus has actually been keeping tabs on the right-footed midfielder since his days at Sporting Lisbon. With his current struggles in England, the Old Lady might finally get her man a few years later than originally planned.
